MDS Transmodal Port LSCI web-application
Q: What are the components that make up the Port LSCI?
A: The Port LCSI is generated from the following six components which were agreed with UNCTAD as most closely measuring a container port’s relative connectivity:
Q: Is the Port LSCI consistent with UNCTAD’s index?
A: The Liner Shipping Connectivity Indices (LSCIs) published by UNCTAD and by MDST are the same as they have been developed together and use the same data. The Country LSCI was initially developed by UNCTAD, and later updated and improved in collaboration with MDST, using data from the MDS Transmodal Containership Databank; it is now jointly generated by MDST and UNCTAD. The Port LSCI was jointly developed by UNCTAD and MDST, building upon the same methodology as the Country LSCI, using data from the MDS Transmodal Containership Databank and both indices are available on-line via the UNCTAD web site (http://stats.unctad.org/MARITIME) and via this LSCI web-application.
Q: How is the Port LSCI generated for each port?
A: For each component, we divide the port’s value by the maximum value for the component in 2006 and then calculate the average of the six components for the port. The port average is then again divided by the maximum value for the average in 2006 and multiplied with 100. The result is a maximum LSCI of 100 in the year 2006. This means that the index for Hong Kong in 2006 is 100 and all other indices are in relation to this value.
Q: What is the source of the data for the LSCI?
A: The source is the MDS Transmodal Containership Databank, which provides data on the deployment of the global container shipping fleet to individual services with information on the operator, route, TEU capacity, service frequency and port rotation. The MDS Transmodal Containership Databank has been maintained on a consistent basis since 2006 and is updated using public domain information provided mainly by the shipping lines but also by shipping industry journals.
Q: Which container shipping services are included in the LSCI?
A: The services included are all those deploying vessels carrying containers on both short-sea as well as deep-sea trade lanes.
Q: How often is the MDST Port LSCI updated?
A: The index is updated every quarter to reflect the latest data from the MDS Transmodal Containership Databank for the most recent quarter, with a comparison with the same quarter in the previous year.
Q: What’s provided for free in the Port LSCI web application?
A: Free access is provided to the Port LSCI for close to 1,000 ports for the most recent quarter and for the same quarter of the previous year.
Q: What's included in the Premium Subscription to the MDST PLSCI web-application?
A: The Premium Subscription allows the user to access the six components that are used to calculate the LSCI for the world’s top 100 most connected container ports. The cost is £500 (including VAT) for a single user license for access to the service for a quarter and £1,800 (including VAT) for a single user license for access to the service for four quarters. Subscribers can pay using a credit card and have immediate access to the application or MDS Transmodal can issue an invoice and subscribers will have access to the application immediately on receipt of payment.
Q: Can I buy data for ports that are not in the top 100?
A: Yes, data can be provided for the six components that are used to calculate the LSCI on a bespoke basis for all the other circa 900 container ports worldwide. For more information contact Antonella Teodoro, antonella.teodoro@mdst.co.uk
